Artist Spotlight - Broken Yolk Ceramics

We are so excited to feature Broken Yolk at the I A I A I shop! Tell us a bit more about the artist behind the brand.

My name is Chelsea Scott and I am originally from North Carolina, now hailing from Los Angeles!

You work with fashion, tell us a bit about your career.

I worked in New York for 8 years for such companies as Tommy Hilfiger and Brooks Brothers. It was a wild ride but it helped me find my love of sweaters & knitwear! A Design Director saw on my resume that I had worked at a yarn shop in high school and put me in her sweaters department - I’ve been obsessed ever since. Eventually I moved west to LA in search of sunnier skies and more square feet. Since here I’ve worked for all sorts of brands- Bebe (where sweaters fell under the category on the website of “sexy tops”) to Equipment and Lucky Brand. It’s been an incredible industry to be a part of - traveling the world, working with folks from all over, and seeing your hard work be bought and worn by a stranger!

Does fashion influence your style in ceramics?

It certainly influences how I think about ceramics. Of course I make a lot of things for my own gratification but I catch myself talking to people at my studio about what clays and motifs they think are trending right now and where there are possible needs or holes in the market. I want to be making sure I’m both making things that people will love and also sharing my own sense of humor applied to the pieces. I recently said to someone “I mean, I see this clay EVERYWHERE right now- what do you think is going to be the next big thing?” and they looked at me shocked.

How did you get started and learned to make pottery?

It’s always been important to me to have a hobby I love outside of fashion. The fashion world can be so all-consuming, I wanted to have a space to get away from that and reset. In New York I did improv comedy but when I moved to LA I wanted to try something different. A lot of my new LA friends were taking ceramics classes so I joined a class (I think this was 2017?) and immediately loved it! I think I am the only one still doing it after all this time.

What do you like most about pottery?

I love that it really lays bare a connection between your thoughts and actions. If I’m stressed or have too much on my mind I throw very poorly. I have to go into the space letting go of all of my neuroses and anxieties and focus on the work alone. I also love that like fashion, people are taking something you’ve created in your own voice and using it to express themselves. There is such an intimate connection between the maker and the customer that way- I made this piece I love and now you use it to decorate your home or desk in the way that best shows who you are. It feels really cool every time.
